Media Junction Workshop

11/10/23

Providing a weekly workshop where we are given tips by those from in the industry to getting in ourselves, I wasn't able to make it to last week where they talked setting up LinkedIn profiles as reaching out, this week was more for those wanting to work in performance, in front of the camera rather than in front.

But some notes did come in handy where the subject of contracts came into the discussion and the rights actors have.

A representative of the performance department apart of Equity, a trade union, we got to hear from Ken who claimed the purpose of this union is to make professional lives in recorded media and performance are the best they can possibly be.

Owning two industrial departments, we only got to hear from the performance side who have claimed to represent all including wrestlers and drag artists.

The last three notes made are:

  1. Actors are not freelances, they are workers with entitlements.
  2. Have a decent agent, do research and read your contracts.
  3. Equity can only help in cases where a signed contract has clearly been breached.
Something mentioned more about using actors for us, is we have to be careful when looking for cast members to use. Especially when having no budget on a student film, we can't state that there will be no pay but we must pay for travel, food and refreshments? Even when using a student.

Bit of complicated workshop on our behalf as the filmmakers but it is something to keep in mind.

Engagement with Film Festivals

First meeting Megan, a graduate of the university in 2017, and is now working as the festival director for Luton's new and growing, 'Bute Street Film and Art Festival'.

Running the 'Youth Film Programme', this goes for ages sixteen to twenty-two who enjoy films and would be interested in helping organise future events. For now, there is only volunteer work where networking and skill progressing will be a top opportunity.

Although now, they are looking into being approved the funding to hire two students on a one to six month contract.

When submitting a film, all ages are welcome to be apart with the only main requirement being the submission fee that increases the later it takes you to submit. It doesn't have to be a film either, it could just be a script.

Or, there is the option of just attending the festivals to watch the films without a submission.

The unique selling point for this is how the festival is close to the area and is open to everything. There is always something different with improvement. "You will never see the same thing again." And it is  also a step up in supporting local businesses.

Next hearing from Annie, a more recent graduate who has had experience in the youth film club. It was shared that she worked on a group project as the production co-ordinator. Being a part of 'Buff Film Festivals', it as shared that working on these projects are a more light hearted experience, not as intense as university is nor makes the industry out to be.

Vicky Hayward

Mad I had to miss last week and getting to meet the assistant director, David Underwood due to a cold, I did get the chance this week to meet Vicky Hayward. An award winning filmmaker and the founder of Moving Image Luton. A creative production company based on the local talent.

Originally, Vicky started off in the music industry working pr management for names as big as Janet Jackson to as little as Beverly Knight. Finding the routine to become overwhelming, Vicky took a step back and began looking into filmmaking.

When making a start, she had joined online communities applying as anything she could for those in need of help.

Starting her own filmmakers group, for now they are only able to take on volunteers when necessary as she is attempting to get a funding in which she will be able to pay whoever she takes on. Talking to her about this, for now I am to await any activity on the Moving Image socials. Contacting her through Facebook directly, she has said to stay in contact, and that I will.
